Ability
What the Scribe does
Ranks hidden in hand, then for one turn after placing.
A Scribe's ranks are hidden: in your hand, your opponent sees only question marks, and once it is placed, the veil stays until your next turn (two turns for the Herald). If the Scribe is taken, it is revealed.
In EMPRISE, hands are visible: each player knows what the other holds. The Scribes are the only exception. With 4, 6, 5 and 8, they are strong cards too, above all through their 8, at the bottom.

Four cards
The four cards of the Scribes
The four Scribes carry the same numbers, 4, 6, 5 and 8, each a quarter turn further on: what is on top on one is on the right on the next. Choosing the right card means choosing which rank will face the enemy.

In a duel, your eight cards come from your two Orders, four per Order, plus one card from each Order kept in Reserve for Sudden Death.
Strategy
Playing the Scribes well
The 8 at the bottom, the 4 on top
The 8 takes almost everything, the 4 almost nothing. Pick the Scribe whose 8 faces the enemy and whose 4 faces the edge. While it is veiled, your opponent doesn't know which of the four you placed.
The veil lasts one turn
During your opponent's turn, your Scribe is an unknown: they have to guess where the 4 is. Place it where a missed attack costs them dearly, and let them hesitate.
Two turns with the Herald
The Herald of the Scribes stays veiled for two turns after placing. Two Heralds placed back to back make a board your opponent can no longer read.
Hide your intentions too
A Scribe in hand masks part of your game: your opponent can't anticipate your ranks. Keep one for the end, when every move is calculated.
The Veiled Shot
While one of your Scribes is veiled, your opponent doesn't know where your Archer's 1 is: that is the Treaty The Veiled Shot, with the Archers.
Facing them
Countering the Scribes
Wait: the veil lifts on the Scribe's next turn, and its 4 appears. If you have to attack blind, do it with big ranks, which take three sides out of four. A Chimera flips a veiled Scribe like any other card, and taking it lifts the veil: what you capture, you can read.
Two per duel
The alliances of the Scribes
Before each duel, you choose two Orders. Some pairs have a name: these are the Treaties, which your profile tracks game after game. The Scribes sign one.
The Veiled Shot with the Archers
The Scribe's veil hides where the Archer's 1 is: it shoots without baring its throat.

Story mode
The Herald of the Scribes
Ranks hidden for two turns after placing.
The Herald is the superior version of the Order: its four cards keep their numbers, but its ability changes. It is earned by finishing chapter VIII of Story mode: eight games, from the Copyist to the Grand Scribe. It is played against the Echo, in Classic matches and in challenges between friends, never in Ranked or in tournaments.
Questions
The Scribes in three questions
Can my opponent see my Scribes' numbers?
No. Neither in your hand, nor on the board while the veil lasts: they see question marks.
How long does the veil last?
In hand, the whole time. On the board, until your next turn; two turns with the Herald. A capture lifts the veil.
How do you earn the Herald of the Scribes?
By finishing chapter VIII of Story mode: eight games, from the Copyist to the Grand Scribe.
